Vessel registration in the BVI is now open to individual and corporate entities from an expanded list of global jurisdictions. Previously, owners often had to form a BVI company, which limited flexibility for some international structures. The amendment now allows eligible entities incorporated in jurisdictions including the United States, European Union, United Arab Emirates, Commonwealth countries, and others to register directly with VISMA without first establishing a BVI company. The requirement for non-resident entities to appoint a BVI Representative Person remains in place to uphold due diligence and compliance under a respected Red Ensign flag administration.
This change gives financiers, managers, and operators streamlined pathways, predictable standards, and increased confidence when choosing the BVI flag within the Red Ensign flag administration.
As the Maritime Authority of the Virgin Islands, VISMA is more than a regulator. We are a strategic partner and global facilitator for vessel registration.
Expanding eligibility reflects the British Virgin Islands’ commitment to accessible maritime services and regulatory excellence. The update supports the blue economy by attracting high-quality tonnage and professional services while maintaining a safe, fully compliant flag. VISMA is proud to play a central role in that growth, not just as an administrator, but as a trusted resource for maritime professionals worldwide.
